How to Replace the Stiff Plastic Cape on McFarlane Batman Figures (Without Damaging the Figure)

How to Replace the Stiff Plastic Cape on McFarlane Batman Figures (Without Damaging the Figure)

If you collect 7-inch action figures, you already know the frustration: McFarlane Toys produces some of the most impressive Batman sculpts on the market, but they almost always come with a massive, heavy piece of molded plastic for a cape.

Not only does a plastic cape weigh down the figure—making wall-mounts and dynamic balance nearly impossible—it completely ruins shoulder articulation and locks your figure into a static pose.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to safely remove the stock plastic cape from a 7-inch Gotham Knight figure and upgrade it with a custom wired fabric cape for anime-accurate, wind-blown dynamics.

Step 1: Safe Removal of the Stock Plastic Cape

Most stock capes are secured into a deep socket on the figure's upper back using heavy factory adhesive. Do not force-pull it dry, or you risk snapping the neck peg.

  1. Heat the Plastic: Submerge the figure’s upper torso in hot water (not boiling) for about 60–90 seconds, or use a hairdryer on medium heat focused on the back socket for 45 seconds. This softens the PVC and loosens the factory glue.

  2. Gently Pry from the Collar: Slowly work a dull plastic pry tool or butter knife under the collar edges.

  3. Pry the Back Peg: Once the glue warms up, gently wiggle the cape’s anchor peg out of the back cavity.

Step 2: Preparing for Staining Protection

One of the biggest concerns collectors ask us about custom soft goods is: "Will dark dye bleed onto my figure’s shoulders over time?"

To prevent color transfer, every fabric batch we craft at The Figure Vault undergoes a rigorous color-fix wash and heat-setting treatment prior to stitching.

Pro Tip for Long-Term Display: If you plan to keep your figure in a humid environment or draped in a dark cape for years, wrapping a tiny strip of clear plastic film around the neck/shoulder pegs before attaching the cape offers an extra layer of peace of mind.

Step 3: Installing & Shaping the Posable Wired Cape

Unlike flat cloth accessories, a proper custom cape features flexible memory wire sewn directly along the outer seams and lower hem.

  1. Seating the Neckline: Slide the custom neck loop beneath the head joint. The micro-drape design fits snugly into the original collar groove without needing messy glue.

  2. Structuring the Shoulders: Pinch the embedded wire near the collarbones to create natural, realistic folds that wrap tightly over the armor.

  3. Posing the Hem: Extend the bottom edges outward. Because of the internal armature, you can shape dramatic wave effects—whether you want a sweeping wind look for a gargoyle ledge pose or a tight stealth-wrap around the body.

Before & After: The Difference Soft Goods Make

  • Original Stock: Heavy center-of-gravity, frozen posture, arms blocked at 45 degrees.

  • Upgraded Soft Goods: Full 360-degree arm articulation, lightweight for dynamic flight poses, and realistic fabric folds that react to your display shelf's lighting.
